Who We Are

Welcome to One Child At A Time Daycare Center, a quality learning home based daycare center, serving the local community in Portsmouth, Virginia. We are experienced preschool teachers, choosing to go out on our own and build our own startup facility through our own vision. Our mission is for children and families to experience individualized education that builds the foundation for a lifetime of success and a life of learning through experienced and caring teachers, proven curriculum and teaching strategies. We offer programs for children aged 2 years through 6 years of age.

Our vision is simple, to be the most nurturing environment for children and the most trusted by parents. Every day we recommit ourselves to the future by focusing on the needs of our children through age appropriate activities in a loving and safe setting. Please feel free to contact us to set up a time when you can come tour our facility and meet our staff. We look forward to meeting you and your children!

Ages We Service

Two’s Program

As toddlers, children are meeting new challenges as fast as they come. Walking, talking, socializing, and alternating between a balance of independence and dependence, curiosity and lots of energy are marks of a toddler. They learn to lead themselves, use the potty and indulge in artistic curiosity. Toddlers enjoy blocks, simple puzzles, manipulatives and dress up. Language and motor skills start to develop in leaps and bounds. Music, rhymes, stories, outdoor play, and learning simplicities envelop much of the day. We guide our toddlers to learn boundaries without discouraging their innate love of learning through a trusting and loving relationship.

Preschool

Young children learn by doing. This age marks the transition from toddler to preschooler. By age three, children have mastered most physical skills and begun to develop socially with peers in cooperative, more focused play. They begin to sit for longer periods of time, listen to stories, sing songs and repeat simple rhymes. We provide a structured environment with planned activities. As preschoolers gain independence and self-control, they begin to think logically, and problem solve. Preschoolers consistently ask the “why” and “how” of the world around them and become imaginative, creative thinkers. By fostering this natural curiosity and integrating educational success with established classroom structure, children will develop self-esteem and confidence that are essential to learning.

Pre-Kindergarten

Pre-K children grow into unique personalities with strong sense of self. They are curious learners who develop strong readiness skills in literacy, language, and logical reasoning areas of development. They grow socially and become problem-solvers, learn to resolve conflict, and maintain healthy peer relationships. Fine motor skills enable them to have control with writing materials so that school readiness such as writing letters and their name become evident. Phonics, vocabulary, comprehension and critical thinking questions are literacy skills worked on with our Pre-K children. Characteristics such as staying on task, regulating behavior, and a positive, confident approach to learning, prepare our children for success.

Our Teachers

Keirra Taylor

I am a mother of 4, one of which I adopted because my heart is so big I felt I wanted to share it with someone that needed it. My love for children is the passion that has driven me, with over 30 years of experience to parent, teach, direct and lead. I feel that my purpose in life is to connect with children so that they may find the truth in who they really are and to find the love inside themselves so that they can go out and share that in the world.

Shanterya Andrews

I have always believed that shaping children’s minds positively at a young age will create a world of successful and wonderful humans. I have been in the childcare field for approximately 10 years. I have an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. The most rewarding part about teaching to me is watching each child’s growth and development through each milestone. Children are our future.
